Le Grand Eléphant
Achtung, freilaufender Elefant! Eltern haften für ihre Kinder! In Nantes stapft ein riesiger mechanischer Elefant aus Stahl und Holz durch das ehemalige Werftgelände. Die Geburtsstadt von Jules Vernes hatte einst einen der größten Häfen Frankreichs. Als die Bedeutung des Hafens abnahm und die Werften Ende der 1980er Jahre schloßen, verödeten die Flächen auf der Île de Nantes. Heute ist die Île unweit des Stadtzentrums mit hippen Restaurants, Clubs und Galerien wieder ein lebendiger Stadtteil.
Unter anderem ist dies dem gewaltigen Elefanten, “Le Grand Eléphant” zu verdanken. Er gehört zum Projekt “Les Machines de l’Île”, das sich in einem Lagerhaus auf der Île de Nantes angesiedelt hat. Eine Gruppe von Künstlern, Ingenieuren und Handwerkern hat ihn und andere phantastische Objekte realisiert.
2007 setzte sich der Elefant zum ersten Mal in Bewegung. Er ist zwölf Meter hoch und 50 Tonnen schwer. Über 50 Personen haben auf der beweglichen Skulptur Platz. Faszinierend ist seine Motorik. Die Bewegungen sind denen seiner lebendigen Artgenossen nachempfunden. Wenn er zischend über das Gelände stapft, bewegen sich seine Ohren, die Augenlider blinzeln. Wenn er seinen Rüssel hebt, heißt es allerdings “Attention”, sonst wird man naß gemacht.
